Tru Blood For Charity

Let the blood spill at the party. Well, actually, let the Tru Blood flow freely at the Emerging Magazine’s 2010 Pre-Emmy Celebrity Luxury Party & Fashion Show. HBO’s official Tru Blood drink produced by FMCG Manufacturing is the Supporting Sponsor of the event.

If that wasn’t enough, the sponsor, FMCG Manufacturing, is donating items for a silent auction in order to gain funds for Shining Star Kids of America, which is creating a new way for long term residential care for foster children. The event is celebrating the best of Hollywood, past and present, while also honoring the nominees of 2010 Emmy Awards. Guest will glimpse the hottest fashions; not only will they see gowns, but also clothes and designs straight from vampire genre films and television shows.

During this two day charity event, Supporting Sponsor, FMCG Manufacturing will be giving away bottles of Tru Blood. The beverage is a product of the HBO hit True Blood. Mixing sex, danger, and romance, the show revolves around vampires as they try to integrate themselves openly into society and how certain humans and certain vampires are effected by all this. The reason for human-vampire coexistence is due to the Japanese creation of synthetic blood, which allows a vampire to gain all needed nutrients without a human victim. The beverage is called: Tru Blood.

In reality, the Tru Blood fans and celebrities enjoy is a carbonated blood orange flavored drink. While it pours like regular soda, in a glass the drink appears dense and opaque. It’s club-goers new favorite as it can be mixed with spirits and bartenders are creating fun new drinks.  Great flavor without the bite. Great taste that matches a great cause.

Tru Blood Beverage Earns Positive Reviews From A.V. Club

Tru Blood BeverageTaste Test, a weekly blog post of the A.V. Club in which its staff sample and present their verdict on unusual foodstuffs has recently taste-tested HBO’s Tru Blood Beverage.

Tru Blood Beverage is a blood orange-flavored carbonated drink that comes in a replicated bottle design as seen on the hit True Blood series and is exclusively sold on the HBO’s online store.

The Unanimous Verdict

The A.V. Club gave a positive reaction to the beverage.

“It’s definitely not just some crappy orange soda squirted into a classy bottle. It’s made with cane sugar, not high-fructose corn syrup, and it’s not overly sweet, like most orange-flavored stuff. It looked deceptively thick when poured, but not insanely so.”

They also tried mixing Tru Blood with Tequila, Bacon vodka and Three Olives grape vodka. And from this experiment, they made a tasty margarita-like concoction (with a great mix of sweet and tart taste) from mixing Tru Blood and Tequila, that has been made set as the sure winner among the three mixes.

Here are the reactions from the A.V. Club people:

  • “It’s actually refreshing. This is the first drink we’ve taste-tested in forever where I feel like I could drink a whole bottle of it. Am I a vampire yet?”
  • “This is actually really good. It’s a little sweeter and a little less sharp than most orange soda. It doesn’t get up my nose as much. But it’s richer and fruitier.”
  • “Tastes like a carbonated cough syrup… not too sweet, honestly not that bad.  Might be good mixed with ginger ale or plain vodka—not the bacon crap.”
  • “It’s thicker than I expected (that’s what she said!), but I guess that goes with the blood theme. However, it’s a little more syrupy than I’d like, so it would actually probably be better watered down. Maybe mixed with Sprite. Or booze, obviously.”
  • “I think the thickness is what made it a good mixer with the tequila. Put that in a fancy glass and throw some colored salt on the rim, and you’ve got a $9 specialty margarita.”
  • “The flavor is a nice sweet-sour balance, but there’s a mildly artificial aftertaste, which is weird considering it’s made with cane sugar.”
  • “Very good with the grape vodka. Tasted like the purple juice ‘relax’ drink, minus the sluggish side effects.”
  • “Tasted like carbonated Hawaiian Punch.”
  • “I will still never watch the show.” [Boo for this reviewer, shame on you!]
  • “It’s chalky. Probably why it tastes like ground-up Smarties.” [who doesn’t like Smarties!]
  • Tru Blood and Vio have similar problems. Both are overly sweet and rich, taste artificial, and are carbonated for no good reason.”
  • “Tastes like a melted cherry Slurpee.”
  • “With bacon vodka, it tastes like biting a live pig, which I suppose is pretty vampire-like.”
  • “With grape vodka, it’s actually a shot I might give a girl at the bar.”
  • “I guess fans of the series will find this kitschy, but my appraiser tells me my Addams Family collectors’ cups aren’t worth shit.”
  • “If real blood tasted like this, all vampires would have dentures instead of fangs. Am I right, people?”

So there you have it folks, a pretty positive and fair reactions out from the A.V. Club guys. On the other hand, I think these beverages would be great as a collectible but it sure won’t hurt if you’d like to taste some of it during the Halloween season with a group of vampire wannabee friends.

Ryan Kwanten At Variety’s Power Of Women Luncheon

Ryan KwantenTrue Blood‘s handsome and charming Ryan Kwanten attended Variety’s Power of Women Luncheon in Beverly Hills on September 24th. In an exclusive interview at the event, Ryan told Extra that his mother is the most powerful woman he knows, saying:

She raised four boys–that’s including my father!…She turned us into men.

Extra also asked Ryan about the taste of the fake blood that’s used on the set of HBO‘s True Blood, and apparently it is nothing like the blood orange flavored soda, Tru Blood. Ryan explained that it’s instead “a bizarre kind of glucose concoction” and no one would want to drink very much of it because:

Like with anything, if you have too much, it’s not gonna go down well.

Fortunately for him, Alan Ball has not made Ryan‘s character, Jason Stackhouse, drink any of it so far, though who knows what Season 3 might have in store.

In addition to talking with Extra, Ryan posed for several photos at the event.

A Toast to Tru Blood!

trubloodIt’s finally here! Well, almost here, anyway. HBO will begin shipping orders of Tru Blood on September 8, 2009 – just in time for the season finale (*sob*). Wondering what it tastes like? HBO bills it as a uniquely carbonated, slightly tart, lightly sweetened blood orange drink. Sounds promising! New York Entertainment offers up these tasting notes:

Tasting notes:
• “The grossest thing about Tru Blood is its name. The drink itself is fizzy, tangy, surprisingly drinkable.”
• “Compared to most soft drinks, it’s refreshing and not too sweet. It also foams just like real blood.”
• “It’s kind of got an orange-Hi-C-mixed-with-Sprite kind of taste going for it.”
• “The cane sugar makes it sweet without it being cloying.”
• “While nowhere near as tasty as I imagine the blood of Eric to be, it has a tangy little kick to it. Consistency-wise, I was pretty happy it wasn’t syrupy and thick. Also, no sickly aftertaste like regular blood.”

Interesting description, huh? There are already fan sites devoted to making cocktails with Tru Blood (Google it, they are out there, I promise!). And fans cannot wait to get their hands on this drink! I have pre-ordered mine – a 4 pack retails for $16 plus shipping. A 24 pack retails for $96 plus shipping. The HBO store has the drink available for preorder. Since I’m a cheapy (economical, I like to call myself) I started with a 4 pack. At $4 a bottle, it will be saved for special occasions, like when Bill and Eric come to visit (oh, how I wish that would actually happen!).

The bottle itself is made of glass, with Chinese symbols around the top. Interesting, since the formula was supposed to be perfected in Japan. I’m willing to let that one slide. In my experience, things that come from a glass bottle are usually pretty darn tasty. Apparently it isn’t bad for you either – under 100 calories and the recommended daily amounts of several vitamins. Brownie points in my book!

HBO has done an excellent job of marketing this product, and I think I speak for all of the fans when I say that we are beyond excited to get a hold of this! When mine gets here, I’ll be toasting all of you, as well as the show!
