True Blood’s Deborah Ann Woll talks on playing vampire Jessica

What Deborah Ann Woll has to say about her character:

Deborah Ann Woll stars as Jessica Hamby in HBO's True BloodDeborah Ann Woll plays vampire Jessica Hamby on HBO’s supernatural hit True Blood. She took some time out of her busy schedule to talk about what it’s like to play a vampire. Woll notes that while Jessica goes through a lot of turmoil, she does get some happiness in between all of the chaos and trouble.

When asked if she ever said; “my character would never say that” to the writers, Woll answered:

“I came up doing classical theater. And when the playwrights are dead, you can’t really argue with them.”

Woll is busy advocating for a cure for choroideremia, a eye disease that causes people to lose their vision slowly until it is completely gone, that her boyfriend, EJ Scott, has. Scott, who Woll met on Match.com, says her boyfriend was legally blind when they met and she loves him desperately.

Woll, who is five feet 10 inches without heels, said she was very lucky to have the role that she has and loves the people she works with.

The Vampires of True Blood Have a Problem with Authority

Facing Threats From All Directions, Will the Vampire Authority Always Win?

The Mellencamp jokes abound in the aftermath of HBO’s broadcast of the third episode of Season 5 of True Blood. Chris Meloni made his long-awaited appearance as Roman Zimojic, and viewers were introduced to the characters who make up the body of the Authority. Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård) and Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) might be viewed as an external threat to the Authority’s authority, but fans have begun to learn the greatest threat might be an internal one.

Alan Ball has said that Season 5 of True Blood would be a reflection of the current state of America’s political battle between extreme religion and secularism. Episode 3 revealed that the Authority will be the vehicle used to present that battle. Roman, as head of the Authority, is the Guardian of the blood of Lilith, and is the main architect of Mainstreaming. Among the seven Chancellors, there is a faction known as Sanguinistas. These are literal and rigidly dogmatic vampires who believe humans are meant to be cultivated as food.

The Authority: The First. The Last. The Eternal:

For an inside peek at The Authority check out HBO’s Inside True Blood Blog which sports a video titled “The Authority: The First. The Last. The Eternal”. The video is filled with scenes from the episode, as well as interviews with cast and crew. The interviews shed light on events viewers have already seen, and hints at exciting things yet to come. It’s entertaining and well worth the watch.  On the more humorous side is Jessica’s video blog featuring her new BFF, Ginger. The socially awkward baby vamp and the consummate fangbanger discuss cutting edge fashion for the daring vampire. Nothing that leads to Jessica planning to purchase a ‘bandage dress’ on Bill’s credit card can be good. Check out the video below!

Video: True Blood Cast Dishes Spoilers at Season 5 Premiere

New Couples, Old Adversaries, a Long Awaited Backstory:

Alexander Skarsgård, Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer at True Blood Season 5 PremiereWhen the cast of HBO’s True Blood turned out for the Season 5 premiere, they were interviewed on the red carpet. Everyone was happy to share information and insights into their characters and the events of the show itself.

*Warning: Mild spoilers ahead!

Alan Ball said that Season 5 is the season of church and state. It’s the season of politics and religion from the vampire perspective. When asked about Scott Foley’s character, Patrick, Mr. Ball explained that he made a bad decision in the heat of battle and it has far reaching consequences. Finally, Mr. Ball alluded to the introduction of some new romantic couples. He couldn’t elaborate because it would give too many story details away.

Jacob Hopkins (Alexander) described his character as feisty and strong minded. He says Alexander grew more obnoxious with each episode.

Denis O’Hare (Russell Edgington) said that vampire politics are the focus of Season 5. Mr. O’Hare explained that when people are brought back to life, they have to lose something. With Russell’s resurrection, he has lost his vicious ambition. In its place are a playfulness, ease, and humor. But make no mistake, Russell is still really dangerous. He still kills a lot of people, and kills them with glee. When asked, Mr. O’Hare said it took Russell about 4-5 episodes to heal. Most intriguingly of all, Russell unexpectedly falls in love again.

“Something happens from across the room. Something happens while sharing a body. Someone you know. You’ll be very surprised  by it.”

Lucy Griffiths (Nora) explained that Nora and her ‘brother’ Eric love each other very much but haven’t seen one another in a long time. Their relationship can be very fraternal, in that they can be very aggressive toward each other. They make a great team when they work together but otherwise they just mess each other up.

Stephen Moyer (Bill Compton) talked of the close relationship that developed between his character and Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård).

“We’re good friends and it’s been a lot of fun. And we sort of love each other.”

Kristin Bauer van Straten (Pam) shared that Nora’s appearance caused a little bit of trouble for Pam. Ms. Bauer van Straten explained that she and Alex have been asking for Pam’s backstory for years and were thrilled to finally see it played out. She says the story explains the Pam we know.

Kelly Overton plays a new werewolf character named Rikki. She describes her character as a strong, resourceful werewolf, the opposite of the damsel in distress. She’s determined to find out what happened to the Pack Master and is not loving Alcide at the moment.

Rutina Wesley said that, despite people’s doubts, Tara is coming back.

Michael McMillian (Steve Newlin) said that becoming a vampire might be the best thing that’s ever happened to Steve. At first, he wondered if Steve would be self-loathing but the reality is, he’s very attracted to power. Jason is the guy Steve always wanted to be and he’s coming after Jason. But, Jason has a new vampire friend in Jessica.

“If you mess with Jason, you mess with Jessica.”

Apparently, the first four episodes are a Pam tour de force, and the origin story between Pam and Eric is fantastic. Fans don’t have long to wait now. Season 5 of True Blood premieres on HBO June 10th.

Check out the video below, if you’d prefer to skip to the good stuff (strictly True Blood related), it starts right before the 3-minute mark. Enjoy!

Deborah Ann Woll, True Blood’s Baby Vamp, Becomes a Compassionate Caretaker

The Love of Her Life is Going Blind:

Deborah Ann Woll and EJ Scott at CNN Heroes Tribute 2011Deborah Ann Woll, who plays baby vampire Jessica Hamby in HBO’s True Blood, has written an essay on the life lessons and the difficulties of loving someone who suffers from the genetic degenerative disease, Choroideremia. EJ Scott, Ms. Woll’s long-term boyfriend – who she calls “the love of my life” – is going blind as a result of this disease. Their journey together as they learn to adapt to EJ’s worsening sight, at the same time they embark upon adventures designed to raise funds for a cure, is both emotional and inspiring.

True Blood Cast Member goes from “Geek” to “Caretaker”

Ms. Woll is a self-described geek who, as a child, enjoyed the New Jersey Science Center. The exhibit that interested and frightened her in equal measure was one that replicated the experience of being blind. Years later, she draws on the experience of the exhibit to inform her understanding and compassion of EJ’s condition. She writes openly of the difficulties associated with learning how to care for EJ with kindness and compassion, while mastering the practical skills this requires:

“As for me, I have learned what it is to be a compassionate caretaker, and what a challenge that can be at times. EJ is incredibly independent but still there are things I must help him with and these will only increase as his sight worsens.”

Both EJ and Ms. Woll remain upbeat in the face of this challenge. They seek to inspire others. EJ has embarked on the 12 Marathons in 2012 Campaign (you can follow his journey on Twitter @12marathons2012) in order to raise awareness of Choroideremia, as well as funding to search for a cure. Ms. Woll supports EJ’s endeavor and takes solace in the fact that “seeing is not done only with the eyes, but with the heart as well”.

Video: Deborah Ann Woll Rolling Stone Interview

Mint Chocolate Flavored Blood?

Rolling Stone Photo Shoot with Deborah Ann WollDeborah Ann Woll sat down with Rolling Stone for a photo shoot this summer and also answered a few questions submitted to her through Facebook and Twitter.  During the video interview, Woll poses in black, lacy lingerie for the shoot and notes that she has always been a huge fan of horror films.  According to her, playing a character such as that of Vampire Jessica Hamby has always been a career goal of hers.  She is also asked in the interview what the best tasting blood is and she’s quick to answer that O+ is the best, and that the blood has a minty chocolate taste.  Interesting!  The final question she is asked is if it is fun to shoot the feeding and fighting scenes on the show.  She adds that while it is really fun to shoot those scenes, sometimes it’s a little more difficult than you might expect.  She adds that one time during a scene she left a huge hickey on Jim Parrack’s neck (Hoyt Fortenberry), and points out that they then had to explain to his wife that it was all part of the job.  Oops!

If you were given the chance, what question would you like to ask Deborah?  Let us know in the comment section below!

True Blood’s Fashion Critiqued

Check Out Bon Temps’ Most Fashionable Inhabitants:

The vampires of True Blood by Art Streiber/HBOThe Fug Girls rated Louisiana’s craziest town not on the vampire to human ratio or the number of werewolves per pack, but on its fashion sense. Since Bon Temps didn’t do too hot, I guess it makes sense that while the whole town is fighting witches and being terrified of being eaten by vampires, fashion doesn’t seem to be at the top of the necessities list. As Lafayette would say, bitch please. Ten is the best score and one is the worst score.

Sookie Stackhouse: 5

A girl cannot live on tiny frocks and booty shorts alone. We suggest Sookie Netflix the middle seasons of Buffy to learn how to incorporate more vampire-friendly separates into her wardrobe. As if she didn’t have enough to do — being the possessor of magical blood, and the beloved of nearly every supernatural man-creature within thirty miles – Sookie also sometimes has to, gasp, wait tables.

Bill Compton: 6

We are amused by Bill going full Men’s Warehouse on us, but… seriously, dude? A pinky ring? Leave Joe Pesci in My Cousin Vinny where he belongs.

Eric Northman: 4

He has spent this entire season dressed like he’s frozen in time as a college student shuffling to the dorm showers. Pull it together, dude, or at least invest in a hoodie with sleeves.

Pam de Beaufort: 9

Pam is perhaps the only person in the Bon Temps area who cares what she’s wearing. And, as such, she’s never met a dubious trend she didn’t try to resurrect (a Juicy sweat suit? Really?), which we imagine is because a century of shopping gets pretty boring after a while. Hello, the woman managed to pull off a red sequined jumpsuit last seen on the set of Dynasty, and she actually cares when viscera lands on her shoes.

Jason Stackhouse: 7

Naked man-abs are awfully effective when it comes to the ladies, which is generally his driving concern in life. When he’s not looking totally CHiPs in his snug police uniform and aviators, Jason wears solely jeans and T-shirts. And sometimes not even the T-shirts. Nor the jeans. (We’re not complaining.)

Tara Thornton: 5

Like Sookie, Tara could benefit from mixing it up on occasion. Bonus points, though, for being smart enough to always wear something she can run in, given that she tends to get kidnapped or held hostage, like, a lot. In fact, we should’ve listed that as one of her hobbies.

Sam Merlotte: 6

We appreciate a man who can rock a good pair of jeans, and indeed, along with a plaid shirt, that is basically all Sam wears. Except for when he’s a dog, at which point his lumberjack couture is too constricting. We like Sam’s Regular Guy look, but points off for the fact that you just know his clothes are mega-funky, given how he’s always taking them off in the woods and leaving them in the dirt while he turns into some animal or another. At least invest in a gym bag or some potpourri sachets.

Alcide Herveaux: 10

We don’t know what he does when he’s not walking around shirtless, and nor do we care. His abs? Don’t mess with perfection.

Jessica Hamby: 7

Any sundress in a ten-mile radius not in Sookie’s closet must therefore be found in Jessica’s. Her girlish aesthetic is totally appropriate given that she’s the vampire equivalent of a college freshman. This current season has seen her get a little, er, nastier, and with that, we’ve seen Jessica’s wardrobe swing slightly sexier — but only slightly. Most of the time, she could still pop into a sorority meeting without anyone batting an eye.

Hoyt Fortenberry: 4

Well, right now he’s depressed, so it’s mostly boxers in front of the TV. The rest of the time, Hoyt looks like he tripped and fell into the Old Navy warehouse. Poor Hoyt. Someone’s going to need to take this boy out for the time-honored post-break-up makeover and spruce him up a little.

Lafayette Reynolds: 8

Lafayette never met a head scarf he didn’t embrace. He may also be the only man in Bon Temps who’s familiar with the concept of premium denim. Yes, Lafayette is a campy, over-the-top dresser, but at least he commits. And he never makes us sad, even when he’s incubating the soul of a dead woman who may or may not be a demon baby-stealer, which is no small feat.

Arlene Fowler: 3

Oh, honey. We know your son might be possessed by an evil spirit (or something?) but there’s no excuse for that hair. Call Miss Clairol and make an appointment to return to planet Earth.

Maxine Fortenberry: 2

Maxine depends completely on the power of a well-deployed muumuu. In the absence of a muumuu, a housecoat is acceptable. Often accessorized by hair curlers. If it’s true that you only look as good as you feel, then Mrs. Fortenberry must feel terrible.

HBO’s True Blood Comic-Con 2011 Panel: Spoilers and More!

The Cast and Alan Ball Answer Moderator and Audience Questions:

Comic-Con 2011 logoThe True Blood cast came out on stage at ComicCon to rousing applause and it’s clear from these videos, there were many die-hard fans in the room. Many spoilers were announced and teasers were uncovered. The panel included: Anna Paquin (Sookie), Stephen Moyer (Bill), Ryan Kwanten (Jason), Rutina Wesley (Tara), Alexander Skarsgård (Eric), Kevin Alejandro (Jesus), Kristin Bauer (Pam), Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette), Deborah Ann Woll (Jessica), and Alan Ball.

A few juicy bits gleamed from these videos:

  • Rutina Wesley “secretly loves the UFC”.
  • When an audience member asked if Eric will remember his time with Sookie, Alan replied: “I feel like that’s too much to give away…no, yes, maybe” Of course, the one question we all wanted answered!
  • When asked if there was any hope for Bill and Sookie the audience started to cheer, but it quickly turned to boos.
  • Anna takes you through the “sausage party” that consisted of her, Joe and Alexander filming the scene at the lake – minus the clothes for the men.
  • The panel is asked what their favorite parts of the season have been so far – some answers might surprise you!
  • The Comic-Con panel contains actors from many nations and it’s apparent when the audience starts asking questions that they are just as multinational.
  • My favorite question of the night was to Alexander Skarsgård: “What in his (Eric’s) history created such a straight up badass?”
  • The most interesting bit of news came from an audience member who asked if the show keeps up the pace it has with the books (a book a season). How long will this show stay on the air? Alan’s response: “As we get further down the road less and less, this season is based on the book…I think the show has a tremendous amount of life. I hope to get to the point where it becomes a problem for us in the writers room why the vampires are aging.”
  • Noticable absences were Sam Trammell home expecting his baby twins, and Joe Manganiello who is working on a film project.

There is so much more to see in these videos. Check them out and tell us what questions you would have asked, or what answer you would have liked to hear!

Video: Red Carpet Interviews at Season 4 Premiere

See What the Cast Has to Say About the New Season:

True Blood Season 4 poster-redChris Balish, co-host of KABC Television’s On The Red Carpet, was lucky enough to interview some of our favorite cast members at the Hollywood premiere of True Blood’s season 4.  According to Stephen Moyer (vampire Bill Compton), this season:

“We’ve got a lot of elements, we’ve got a lot of things in the air this year. I had very little to do with the witches, I do work with them a little bit and that’s been really fun. It’s very new, something completely different. They have a power that we’ve never explored before. ”

Speaking of the challenges writers of this genre might face, the actor further explains, interestingly:

“I think that the tough thing for any writer that’s doing a vampire show is to work out what is catnip and what is Kryptonite for the lead baddie, or the goodie — vampires. What is going to be something that can overpower them or something that is going to be attractive to them. So the witches are part of that element.”

Since working alongside his wife (Paquin) is all he knows, he seems to think that after filming has wrapped, he will become a “crazy stalker groupie”, tagging along on whatever project she works on next.  How sweet!  No doubt many of you would not mind that a bit.

Anna Paquin (Sookie Stackhouse), like the rest of the cast, is not allowed to divulge much, thanks to strict instructions from Alan Ball (series creator, writer and director).  She expressed relief that they’d be done filming soon (which they probably are by now!), saying:

“I’m so excited for everyone to finally see it so we can start talking about it and stop having to give these annoying interviews where I’m like, ‘I can’t tell you that!’”

Rutina Wesley, who plays Sookie’s best friend Tara, simply reiterated that we will find out where her character has been, that she’s better, and she obviously has a new ’do.

Deborah Ann Woll, the lovely New Yorker who plays baby vamp Jessica, shares that this season is her favorite.  She does love Jessica & Hoyt’s relationship, and hopes that things work out for them.

Spoiler Alert:

Marshall Allman, the youngun’ who plays Sam Merlotte’s little brother Tommy, reveals some interesting and possibly disturbing news:

“It definitely turns weird when Sam hits on Tommy. So he’s added incest and murder to his rap sheet. But, you know, Sam’s got some weird secrets up his sleeve.”

Finally, we have Joe Manganiello (werewolf Alcide Herveaux), who shares that this season we will see a new pack, one he dislikes.  There will also be tension among him and some shapeshifters.  Speaking of tension of an entirely different sort, when asked, “Are you going to get along with the faeries and the witches?”, he slyly responds:

“Well, Sookie being a faerie, yeah — I’d like to get along with her.”

Only one more day, Truebies!  Buckle up, it’s going to be a wild ride!
